Stellar Mass Comparisons: Virgo Filament and DESI EDR

Abstract:

Using data from the Virgo Filament Survey, we used a coding model known as Bagpipes to generate an estimation of a galaxy’s physical properties. By doing this, we could compare this new data from Bagpipes to what we already have estimated by Magphys to gauge its accuracy. This was also an opportunity to see the overall efficiency of Bagpipes in terms of running in parallel and accessing the data. On top of that, we looked into the newly released DESI EDR to see what galaxies it found within the Virgo Filament section of the sky, that way we could see any galaxies currently missing from the Virgo Filament Survey. From here, we created many graphs to better view the new data, such as each of the galaxy’s steller mass, star formation rate, and their position in the sky.
